Laser Periodontal Therapy

Laser Periodontal Therapy:

Periodontal disease affects approximately 80% of adults and is a growing concern in our society. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that invades the gum pockets around teeth. Normal "cleanings" involve scaling to remove the mechanical irritants (plaque & tartar) and deep cleanings remove plaque, tartar and diseased tissue but do not completely eliminate the underlying bacteria in the gum pocket.

Laser Bacterial Reduction (LBR) reduces or eliminates the bacteria before the normal cleaning begins.

Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy (LAPT) reduces or eliminates the bacterias in deep pockets during deep scaling and root planing appointments.

3 Reasons to decontaminate teeth prior to cleaning appointments:

- To eliminate periodontal disease bacteria and stop the infections before they cause physical destruction to teeth, gum and bone.

- To reduce or eliminate bacteremias. During the normal cleaning process, most patients will have some areas that may bleed, this allows bacteria that are present (in all our mouths) to flood the bloodsteam. The latest research shows that these oral pathogens have now been linked to other diseases such as cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, etc.

- To prevent cross contamination of infections in one area of your mouth to other areas.  Decontamination minimizes the chance of picking up bacteria from one tooth pocket and depositing it in another.
